Ludwig Mies Van Der Rohe
German, 1886 - 1969
Ludwig Mies van der Rohe was a German-American architect widely regarded as one of the pioneers of modernist architecture. Known by most as simply "Mies", van der Rohe sought to create a new style of design in the years following World War 1, making use of modern materials like industrial steel and plate glass to with a minimal free-flowing structure to his buildings which he called "skin and bones" architecture.
It was an attitude that Mies would carry over into the realm of furniture design later in life. Often collaboating with fellow modernist Lily Reich, he created pieces which have become popular classics, such as the Barcelona chair and table, the Brno chair, and the Tugendhat chair. In keeping with his philosophy that "God is in the details" (a quote for which he is often attributed), Mies van der Rohe's furniture is known for fine craftsmanship, a mix of traditional and elegant fabrics, and in the case of his chairs, a distinct separation of the supporting structure from the surfaces. He died in 1969.
