Born in Kansas City in 1923 and raised in Long Beach, California, Milo Baughman became one of the most influential figures in mid-century modern furniture design. His relaxed, coastal upbringing shaped his signature style—modern furniture that is both approachable and sophisticated.
At just thirteen, Baughman designed his family’s home, including both the exterior and interior—a glimpse of the vision that would later define his career. After serving in the Army Air Forces during World War II, where he occasionally designed officer’s clubs, he studied product and architectural design at the Chouinard Art Institute (now CalArts).
Baughman began his professional journey at Frank Brothers in Los Angeles, one of the first modern furniture stores in the U.S. There, he created window displays and began producing his own custom furniture designs. In 1947, at only 24 years old, he launched Milo Baughman Design Inc., marking the beginning of a legendary career in American modern furniture.
Soon, his designs were in high demand. Baughman collaborated with Glenn of California, Pacific Iron, Drexel, and Winchendon Furniture, helping to define the California Modern furniture movement. His clean, west-coast style resonated nationwide, blending function, comfort, and timeless elegance.
In 1953, while in High Point, North Carolina, Baughman met Thayer Coggin, a partnership that would last fifty years and transform the furniture industry. Together, they produced some of the most iconic mid-century modern furniture ever made—sleek, functional, and stylish designs that remain highly sought after by collectors, designers, and homeowners today.
Using materials such as chrome, walnut, rosewood, and luxurious upholstery, Milo Baughman furniture embodies effortless modern living. His famous designs—swivel chairs, scoop chairs, recliners, lounges, and sofas—balance comfort and style with clean lines and a sense of modern luxury.
Even after his death in 2003, Thayer Coggin continues to manufacture classic Milo Baughman chairs, sofas, and dining furniture, keeping his legacy alive. His celebrated pieces, such as the 951-103 chair, the circular sofa, and the armless dining chair, remain timeless favorites in both residential and designer interiors.
Today, Milo Baughman furniture is featured in the permanent collections of leading museums, including the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA). Collectors and interior designers around the world continue to seek out authentic Milo Baughman designs for their mid-century modern elegance, comfort, and enduring appeal.
