Paavo Tynell
Paavo Tynell (1890–1973) was a pioneering Finnish industrial designer celebrated for his elegant and innovative lighting designs that helped define 20th-century Scandinavian modernism. A master craftsman and visionary, Tynell co-founded Oy Taito Ab in 1918, serving as head designer and transforming the company into one of Finland’s leading lighting manufacturers.
Tynell’s refined approach combined brass, glass, and perforated metal with graceful, organic forms that brought warmth and artistry to functional lighting. His creations illuminated landmark interiors across Finland, including government buildings and works by Alvar Aalto, with whom he frequently collaborated.
In the post-war years, Tynell expanded internationally, freelancing for major American firms such as Lightolier Inc., where he merged Nordic simplicity with modern American elegance. Though he spent much of his professional life working with U.S. clients, he continued to live in Finland.
Today, Paavo Tynell’s lamps and chandeliers remain icons of mid-century design—highly sought after by collectors and admired for their timeless craftsmanship, sculptural beauty, and poetic use of light.
