Early 19th Century Dutch Renaissance Kussenkast
-
Description
This exceptional antique case piece is a kussenkast, made in The Netherlands, at the very beginning of the 19th century. “Kussenkast” is Dutch for “pillow case.” The antique is not named such because it is a case for storing pillows, but rather for storing linens. The name comes from the pillow shaped panels that extend from the doors’ fronts. Typically made of fine and exotic woods, the fortunate Dutch would furnish their homes with kussenkasts as a display of wealth. This piece was constructed using oak, rosewood, and birds-eye mahogany. The interior has two fixed shelves; the lower contains a drawer. Detailed carvings also grace the antique. Carved lion heads can be found towards the cornice, with spiral and floral carvings found on the skirt. Typical of most kussenkasts, this piece is raised on immense ebony bun feet. c.1800.
