Description
This rare oval dining table was produced by a master cabinetmaker in Italy during the 1940s. The design is attributed to Franco Buzzi, with several closely related examples documented. The piece originates from a private residence in Florence.
The table features a sculptural quadripod pedestal base in walnut, with four gracefully splayed legs curving outward from a raised central support. The elongated front and back legs contrast subtly with the shorter lateral ones, creating a dynamic cruciform footprint. Each leg tapers into an elegant, scroll-like curve. The oval top is veneered in beautifully grained walnut and accented with fine inlaid stringing along the perimeter, adding a refined layer of craftsmanship and contrast.
This design exemplifies the originality and quality of Italian 1940s furniture, drawing on neoclassical and antique influences while maintaining a sense of modern dynamism and lightness.
The table is in overall good condition. The top has been fully restored and refinished. The legs with signs of age and use, including scratches and minor marks. A full condition report can be provided upon request.
Literature: Sedie divani poltrone, Vittorio Borachia & Carlo Pagani, published by Editoriale Domus, 1950, figure 631 and 647 for a similar example. -
